(Multisensory) Daring Decoders: Learn to Read Multi-Syllable Words!

In this engaging series, students will learn to unlock the "code" of English through the study and application of syllable division strategies. If your child is successful with single syllable words but struggles to read multisyllable words, this class will provide them with strategies for decoding these longer words. Every week, students will be introduced to a new syllable division strategy. Using research-backed approaches that follow the Science of Reading, students will become better able to isolate syllables within longer words, identify what syllable type they are, and determine the corresponding vowel sound. Through the use of multi-sensory learning methods, games, and short stories, participants will be able to drill the new skill they've uncovered. With the right approach, consistency, and lots of practice, students can become more proficient at reading words that follow the word types below: Week 1: "Rabbit" VC/CV Words (i.e., rabbit, picnic, absent, trumpet, submit, basket, etc.) Week 2: "Tiger" V/CV Words (i.e., hotel, spoken, raven, protect, silent, focus, etc.) Week 3: "Camel" VC/V Words (i.e., camel, lemon, finish, cabin, visit, etc.) Week 4: Closed/Silent-e VC/CVCe Words (i.e., mistake, inside, escape, reptile, cupcake, etc.) Students should be comfortable reading the following sample words, as they will need to be comfortable decoding different single-syllable words: hand, mint, twig, chop, drag, pro, flu, she, take, bone, shine, you, your, of, was, are, they, have, from.

French Beginner Course 🥖🧀 🇫🇷

In this ongoing course, students will begin to learn the building blocks of French through themed vocabulary classes. Each week will build on the previous week. This is a beginner level french class. This class is great for students who have little to no prior experience with French. This class will be near-immersive (about 80% in French, 20% in English to ensure student comprehension). Each class will be structured as follows: introductions by both the teacher and students (this will take place in English), and then we will switch to learning in French. In each class, students will learn through repetition, games and conversations. Students will be learning simple vocabulary and then build sentences throughout the class and they will have many opportunities to speak. Repetition for language acquisition is key and will play a large part in this course, both in the form of speaking and singing (don't worry, you don't need to be a professional. It's just for fun!) The class structure will be as follows: Week of January 1: House items Week of January 8: Food Week of January 15: Greetings Week of January 22: Clothing Week of January 29: Geography Week of February 5: Songs Week of February 12: Animals Week of February 19: Conversations ------- Students will have the opportunity to speak throughout the class. Because students are encouraged to repeat and speak in class, a working microphone is required. Due to Koala policy, students must identify themselves on camera at least once at the beginning of class.
